“Peanuts” — Sheniz Janmohamed

They were banned from restaurants

that served

whites

drinking imported water and devouring choice cut steaks

from Masaai farmers tending cows in burnt grasslands

dining under sparkling chandeliers with generator power

while the rest of town

ate blindly.

Slapping down jeweled hands on mahogany tables

toothpicks teetering in their mouths as they laughed at

stammering waiters with holes in

their pants.
